Food production is full of challenges and numerous producers invest a lot of effort into innovative development of new foods, which have better composition, contain less additives, support health or have other properties which are consumer or environment friendly. Credible information on such products often hardly reach consumers. Slovenian food producers develop numerous new and innovative foods, among which are also those with better nutritional composition, which sometimes do not survive hard competition on international market. Slovenian producers often do not have sufficient marketing funds to present such innovative foods and their advantages to consumers, that sales of these products would enable rentable production of such foods.

To support innovation among Slovenian food industry and to enable wider selection of food quality food products to Slovenian consumers, we started with Innovative food awards project in 2014. At the end of each year we publish a call for most innovative foods, which can be applied by food producers as well as consumers. Results of the selection are presented at the beginning of next year. We take in account various aspects of innovation, especially specialties regarding the composition of foods aimed to achieve better nutritional quality. We enable free of charge communication of award in public, on food labels as well as in marketing.

Nutrition institute is engaged in research and education in the field of nutrition and advising the food industry in the formulation and labeling of foods. In the scope of the institute, research group Healthy Nutrition is established, which performs research on food and nutrition.
